The Dirty – Although Dirty is a membership lounge (members can revel in their social privileges in the VIP lounge/balcony among several other extras), non-members can drink with a drink-by-the-day pass and enjoy the community features like the 80″ HD monitors, food and $2 beer specials. The space also features a raised stage for live bands, a dance floor and a slew of small tables for a little more intimacy.

3. Flying Saucer – College kids and beyond pack this bright, cavernous space on weekends and Mondays for the largest selection of draft beer in town. Contributing to the general din of the place are the namesake, sound-reflecting souvenir saucers lining the walls. It’s easy to hang out with your group at picnic-style tables, though it can be nearly impossible to hear someone three feet away when it’s crowded. Hidden in back is a small refuge with low music, comfortable seating and a pool table.

7. Kings Barcade – It’s the solid booking and an unpretentious atmosphere that make this club a great hangout. A little on the small side, maybe, Kings compensates with a split floor design that leaves you close to the stage in back, but with plenty of room to play pool, get a drink or socialize with friends on the bar side. A good range of local and touring acts play here, and the cover charges aren’t likely to break your bank.

8. Havana Deluxe – Havana Deluxe may have started as the original Raleigh cigar bar, but its popularity endures because it’s a real bar’s bar. Come in the front door and descend a small staircase, which seems appropriate as it’s the sort of place where it’s nice to make an entrance. If you’re with a group, the comfortable couches and chairs are just right. Large boxes of industrial-sized matches are indicative of the bar’s smoker-friendly nature.
